AI Search Reports Are Selling Certainty
the Industry Doesn’t Have.

My mother used to say, "When in doubt, don't". Be careful what you read. Be extra careful what you believe.

Thirty-year search strategist documents how a widely circulated AI search report contradicts its own charts and glossary, finds a headline figure quietly revised after publication, and argues the measurement industry is repeating the pattern his book describes.

SAVANNAH, Ga., Sept. 8, 2026 — Bennie Warshaw, founder and CEO of WEBPRO International and author of Scroogled: SEO Survival, completed a page-by-page analysis of Similarweb’s 2026 Generative AI Landscape report and documented several places where the report’s summary figures don’t match its own charts, glossary, and earlier editions of itself.

The report is available from Similarweb at https://www.similarweb.com/corp/reports/2026-generative-ai-landscape/.

The analysis found that a single metric, generative AI app downloads, was reported two different ways depending on when a reader downloaded the file. Coverage of the July 22 launch, including PPC Land and Search Engine Journal, quoted the report’s summary page as 2.7 billion downloads, up 134%. The chart on page 6 of the same document showed 4.4 billion downloads against 2.8 billion the prior year, a 58% increase. The version now posted on Similarweb’s site reads 4.4 billion and 58% on both pages. No correction notice appears anywhere in the file.

It also found that the report’s headline advertising statistic changes definition three times inside the document. Page 2 describes ad penetration as 26% of ChatGPT chats. The chart on page 31 measures the share of ChatGPT conversations containing ads. Page 35, the report’s own glossary, defines the same metric as the percentage of ChatGPT responses containing a sponsored result. Similarweb’s own blog uses the third framing.

Nobody had to lie for that to happen. It’s what you get when the summary is written for engagement and the chart is written for accuracy. The summary is the part that travels. And when the summary gets fixed after the fact, the version everyone quoted is still the one in circulation.

Warshaw noted that competing measurement firm Adthena published materially different figures for the same period. Adthena recorded AI Overviews in 18% of US searches and 23% of UK searches in June 2026, where Similarweb’s page 10 chart shows US AI Overviews above 40%. Adthena also recorded zero ChatGPT ad placements across 169,560 UK scrapes in June, a month when Similarweb’s page 31 chart shows UK ad penetration climbing above 30%.

Two firms that sell measurement for a living described the same market in the same month and produced incompatible answers. Neither has published enough methodology to settle it. That’s not a scandal. That’s the actual state of the channel, and it’s the thing the marketing collateral papers over.

The Missing Remedy

Warshaw’s sharper criticism concerns what the 38-page report recommends. Its conclusion on page 33 advises brands to build a recognized brand, earn trust, create authoritative content, and maintain an omnichannel presence.

That’s 1994 advice, and I know because that’s the year I started this company. The report contains three demo buttons and one genuinely actionable instruction, and that one came from an outside consultant, not the vendor. When a company sells you the diagnosis and the monitoring subscription and the treatment plan is four sentences everyone already knew, you should ask what you actually bought.

He pointed to a passage on page 27, contributed by Lily Ray, VP of SEO and AI Search at Amsive, as the most useful content in the document. Ray notes that every major AI search product relies on retrieval-augmented generation, which draws from search indexes, meaning AI position follows organic position.

That’s the whole answer, sitting on page 27 of a report selling a new measurement category. The new era runs on the old fundamentals.

Connection to Scroogled

Warshaw’s book, published in late July of 2026, documents Google’s treatment of the meta description tag, including years of rewritten descriptions with industry-measured rewrite rates of 60% to 70%, followed by October 2025 tests replacing publisher copy with Gemini-written descriptions.

The book describes those replacements as complete sentences, fluent, confident, and not yours.

Fluency arrived, and accountability never did. That’s this report. A marketer reads four confident bullets in an email and never opens the pages underneath. The summary consumed the demand for the source. Similarweb published an answer box about answer boxes and got caught by the same physics.

On His Own Forecast

Warshaw first told colleagues in December 2025 that AI-assisted results would appear in 60% of US searches before the end of 2026, and put the figure in writing in February 2026. At the time, Similarweb’s own chart on page 10 of the new report had US AI Overviews in the mid-30s, after a spike to 40% in August 2025 and a fall back to 27% that October.

The same chart shows where the line went next. AI Overviews sat near 13% of US searches in June 2025 and reached 42% to 43% by May 2026, roughly 30 points in eleven months. Holding that pace puts the figure at or near 60% by December.

I made that call when Google was still turning the dial up and down, and I stand by it. It’s my planning assumption for client work. It’s judgment, not measurement. I don’t run a panel, and I’m not going to dress an opinion up as data. That distinction is the entire point.

Warshaw noted the forecast is stated on Similarweb’s method, and that Adthena’s method put the same figure at 18% in June. “Pick your ruler before you pick your number,” he said.

Documented Results

WEBPRO International currently supports close to thirty orthodontic practices nationally, a vertical Warshaw describes as directly exposed to AI answer boxes. The firm’s approach uses uniquely written page-level copy, hand-written per-page JSON-LD schema rather than site-wide templates, FAQ schema at depth, and directly managed Google Business Profiles.

One fourteen-location group grew from 14,070 to over 25,700 unique monthly visitors over five months, an 83% increase, with every location appearing in both map pack and page-one organic results.

They still compete with Gemini every day, and so does everyone. The click is smaller than it was when the internet was honest. But smaller and gone are not the same word.

The bigger picture

Read the pages, not the bullets.

This release covers the headline findings. The full page-by-page analysis, with screenshots and chart comparisons, is in our white paper Certainty For Sale.

Open the file. Find the page. Check the number against the thing it claims to describe. That habit is the whole fix.
